Elu événement sportif 2015 en Loire Atlantique pour sa 1ère édition, événement innovant 2016 par France congrès pour sa deuxième, événement sportif métropolitain 2017 pour sa troisième, événement de l’année 2019 du circuit international par les joueurs et la PSA, l'Open international de Squash de Nantes ne cesse de surprendre par son originalité.
Notre identité ? Conjuguer le sport de haut-niveau et la culture dans des lieux insolites de Nantes : après le lieu unique en 2015, La Cité des Congrès en 2016, les Machines de l’île en 2017, le théâtre Graslin en 2018, le Château des ducs de Bretagne en 2019 comme épilogue de la saison 1.

Après une pause choisie en 2020 et une annulation en 2021, en 2022, c’est la reprise tant attendue… L’épisode 6 ouvre la saison 2 de notre événement. Pour cette nouvelle saison, l’idée se construit comme une série TV, une nouvelle intrigue, de nouveaux acteurs … Les ingrédients qui ont fait le succès des éditions précédentes sont toujours là. Pour l’instant, le mot d’ordre est SECRET. A commencer par le lieu qui sera dévoilé au dernier moment. Seules les dates sont connues.

Un événement international, un spectacle d’exception, une rencontre artistique et sportive. Un moment de partage inoubliable. Un événement de rentrée inédit, bel et bien à l’image de Nantes, résolument entre culture & sport.

Tout un programme pour cet événement unique en France et au-delà : Open de France de Squash du 12 au 17 septembre 2022 à Nantes. A parité, les ténors du squash mondial jouent les clandestins pour réinventer des combats underground !

OFS : Que représente l’Open de France pour toi ? Qu’est l’Open de France par rapport aux autres Open que tu fais ?

CS : L'Open de France est forcément spécial à mes yeux car c'est l'occasion de jouer dans mon pays, devant un public Français et aussi devant des gens qui d'habitude me voient sur un écran. Ils sont les premiers à apprécier me voir jouer en vrai plutôt que sur leur télé. La proximité est importante dans les deux sens. Même si j'aime jouer aux 4 coins du monde, dans des endroits incroyables, il n'y a rien de mieux que de jouer à la maison :)

OFS : Que représente l’Open de France pour toi ? Qu’est l’Open de France par rapport aux autres Open que tu fais ?

GM : En ce qui concerne l’open de France à Nantes, j’ai effectivement énormément de bons souvenirs là-bas ! C’est l’une des seules fois dans l’année où l’on peut jouer devant un public français et l’atmosphère est juste incroyable années après années dans des lieux à chaque fois différents ! J’ai souvent réussi à me faire porter par ce public et ce sont des sensations que je n’oublierai jamais de ma vie, même les gens qui ne connaissent pas forcément le Squash sont à fond derrière et toujours bienveillants.
Le travail de toute l’organisation pour trouver des lieux et une ambiance unique fait que chaque année une nouvelle histoire s’écrit pour mettre le Squash sous les projecteurs comme rarement !

OFS : What is world Squash for you ? What is the French Open in the landscape of the international events ?

AG : The Professional Squash Association (PSA) is the global governing body responsible for the administration of both men's and women's professional squash around the world. With over 1,400 registered players and more than 200 events taking place around the globe every year, the PSA World Tour and the PSA Challenger Tour - both managed and run by the PSA - showcases the game of squash at its highest level in some of the world's most unique and stunning locations.
The French Open, now held in Nantes, really is one of the highlights of the season on the PSA World Tour and has become famous for its ambition to take squash to new audiences and expose the sport to people who have never experienced professional squash.
The event is also renowned for bringing entertainment and sport together producing incredibly interesting evenings of culture and sport.
The players return year after year because they know they will experience a new and exciting venue each year.

OFS : How and why do you enjoy the French Open ? What are its strengths compared to other international Squash Open ?

JB : My first experience of Nantes took me back to the great tournaments in the 80’s and 90’s where you had crowds queuing to get in the venue, which I had never seen before in the PSA world Tour to be quite honest with you.
The other impressive feature was the entertainment displays throughout the years, that the Nantes tournament has been going, outside the Ssuash matches : live DJs, internationally renowned djs, animation, light shows, dance shows, all this creativity that adds another aspect of entertainment.
And the other impressive scenario is the fact that the event, every year, goes to a completely different venue, with a completely different look from the Congress Center, where we had the mapping animation and worldwide famous DJ to the Opera House, to the Elephant. It’s all been really impressive, and then of course the castle.
80% of the crowd are not Squash playing people, which that doesn’t happen in any other event around the world, which just shows how impressive the advertising and promotion of the event is, and the organizing committee and tournament organizers are professionals. Everyone has a different skill set that workd on their own time with huge amount of passion and understanding of what it’s like to entertain.
The other major point is the quality of the players that come to play. The players playing before always come back which is a sign of a very very popular tournament. To me, it’s very much one of the best events, and the best event on the PSA World Tour. There is a lot of terrific events like Canary Wharf, the Tournament of Champions, iconic venues for different places like the Pyramids but there are so many aspects of the Nantes event that in my eyes : is the very best.
